His sister, Kate, has to contend with the unwelcome attentions of her uncle's business associates. Nicholas is forced into unwelcome employment to help secure support for his widowed mother and his sister from their mercenary uncle, Ralph, upon whose mercy they have been thrown. The action takes place in London, with excursions to Devon, Yorkshire, and Portsmouth, as we follow the adventures of the eponymous hero. In “Easy Riders, Raging Bulls”, Peter Biskind takes us on the wild ride that was Hollywood in the ’70s, an era that produced such modern classics as “The Godfather”, “Chinatown”, “Shampoo”, “Nashville”, “Taxi Driver” and “Jaws”. An unabashed celebration of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll (onscreen and off), “Easy Rider” heralded a heady decade in which a rebellious wave of talented young filmmakers invigorated the movie industry. In 1969, a low-budget biker movie, “Easy Rider”, shocked Hollywood with its stunning success. Brief Summary of Book: Easy Riders, Raging Bulls: How the Sex, Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll Generation Saved Hollywood by Peter Biskind It’s one of those books that at times actually makes you shake your head in disgust at how some of the characters act. Simon, one of the characters has special needs, and my son is autistic, so how he was treated by his mother struck a nerve with me. Right from the offset I was emotionally invested in this book. You have to feel some sympathy for her downtrodden husband and traumatised brood – although you still wouldn’t want your daughter to bring any of them home!īut, there is one hero (in my eyes), and both karma and revenge make uncomfortable appearances.Ī must read! Enjoy Pedigree Crush with a Twisted Gene – and then take a look at Nowhere Boulevard, also by Ms Black. Our main character, Violet, is an obnoxious person who could sit comfortably at the table of a soirée held by the third reich – with her contempt for the disabled, ‘negroes’, and pretty much everyone outside her twisted, small town life. The read undulates – in places slow and deliberate, painting mental images of the numerous and intense characters, and quickens through sections of suspense and high drama! The pace and narration is quite different to my previous two reads, to the point where I could believe it by a different author. Pedigree Crush with a Twisted Gene is the third of Katherine Black’s books that I have read, and does not disappoint. 6/24/2023 0 Comments Something wilder reviewLeo Grady knew mirages were a thing in the desert, but they'd barely left civilization when the silhouette of his greatest regret comes into focus in the flickering light of the campfire. Frankly, Lily would like to take him out into the wilderness-and leave him there. It pays the bills but doesn't leave enough to fulfill her dream of buying back the beloved ranch her father sold years ago, and definitely not enough to deal with the sight of the man she once loved walking back into her life with a motley crew of friends ready to hit the trails. But Lily is nothing if not resourceful, and now uses Duke's coveted hand-drawn maps to guide tourists on fake treasure hunts through the red rock canyons of Utah. Growing up the daughter of notorious treasure hunter and absentee father Duke Wilder left Lily without much patience for the profession.or much money in the bank. The "reigning romance queens" ( PopSugar ) and New York Times bestselling authors of The Soulmate Equation and The Unhoneymooners present a charming and laugh-out-loud funny novel filled with adventure, treasure, and, of course, love. 6/24/2023 0 Comments Lucy lennox thick as thievesHis arc felt organic and never forced so that the story went in the direction the author wanted. On the opposite side, seeing Parker’s character development as his feelings toward Julian shift from platonic to romantic love was delightful. Lennox maintains a delicate balance between emotion and angst so that the reader feels for the characters without dragging down the novel’s otherwise hopeful and upbeat tone. Julian’s priority is always on his friendship with Parker, even at his own cost. Julian’s angst and Parker’s obliviousness shine through, but neither overshadow the unflinching friendship and love they have for each other. This particular installment leans heavily into certain romance tropes, such as “best friends to lovers” and “left at the altar,” but includes no sense of staleness or the feeling that I’ve read this before. Lennox saved the best for last in this sweet romance series that centers on a small ski town in Colorado. 6/23/2023 0 Comments Hannah ewens fangirlsCompare Standard and Premium Digital here.Īny changes made can be done at any time and will become effective at the end of the trial period, allowing you to retain full access for 4 weeks, even if you downgrade or cancel. (Hey, at least Aunt Becky liked my post, right?) I’m sure we’ve all had the experience of starting a new social media account and then getting almost no likes or shares aside from some friends. But while it’s true that word of mouth marketing is very powerful, most businesses do not know how to succeed with social media. It feels like most business teachers today are talking about social media. We all love the idea that other people will promote our business for free on Facebook, Youtube and other platforms. In a world of one million self-proclaimed social media “experts,” that’s a breath of fresh air! In this book, Jonah Berger shows us how to succeed with social media using advice that is both practical and most importantly SCIENCE-BASED. 6/23/2023 0 Comments The distant dead bookA quiet, seemingly unremarkable man, he connected with just one of his students: Sal Prentiss, a lonely sixth grader who lives with his uncles on a desolate ranch in the hills. But while beef is no longer the state’s largest export product, the paths taken by beef cattle to go from range to market had a lasting impact on paths developed for human travel. Since the Civil War, beef has steadfastly remained at the center of Texas culture and its agricultural economy. Back then, men and boys on horseback rode through the fields, plains and hills of what’s now the center of the country, forming trails that remained long after the last of the cattle drives - trails that became some of this country’s most well-traveled highways.Ĭonceptions of Texas, for natives and non-Texans alike, often begin with sepia-tinged images of cattle drives, visions of sprawling ranches and the smoky smell of slow-cooked beef briskets. Fourteen-year-old Frank King, a cattle drover in the late 19th century, was responsible for moving cattle through Texas and points north. 6/23/2023 0 Comments How you date men when you hate menRoberson’s great strengths are her blistering comedic sense and her cringeworthy, unexaggerated insights into her dealings with men. Readers in search of deeply personal revelations should look elsewhere, but those seeking relatable accounts of just how unromantic the pursuits of romance actually are will be richly rewarded. There is no narrative arc (chapters include, among others, “Crushes,” “Flirting,” and “Breaking Up”), catalyst for personal or romantic evolution, or tests of any real consequence for the author. Despite the catchy title, this book is neither a polemic against men nor a navigational how-to tome filled with advice. Roberson, a freelance humorist and researcher at the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, wields generous self-criticism to chronicle the current state of affairs among heteronormative singles on the hunt for love and/or just enough interaction with the opposite sex to keep the conversation about male idiocy going. A frank battle cry from a 20-something woman in the modern-dating trenches of New York City. |
